Volume 1: Scent of the Month – Frankincense & Myrrh

This time of year… the music, the lights, the scents, all the tradition… provides us the perfect time to highlight two special ingredients in one of our favorite soaps and face scrub — Frankincense and Myrrh. You likely recognize them from the Christmas Story and perhaps you can even recite the words to the famous holiday carol and how these two celebrated symbols and gifts are given to the child born in a manger. But, have you ever wondered where Frankincense and Myrrh come from and why they were considered so special?

After a little research we thought we’d share with you some interesting facts we found. Frankincense and Myrrh are both aromatic gum resins obtained from rare trees found in Africa. The gift of these two essences, along with gold, from the three kings, as the story goes, reveals their value and the fact that they were most likely reserved for use by royalty.

Some 5,000 years ago, Frankincense and Myrrh were burned as incense in religious ceremonies, used as insect repellent, perfume, salves for wounds and were key ingredients in the embalming process. Today, you’ll find myrrh in some popular natural toothpastes, due to its proven benefits to dental and gum health. Frankincense has been studied and applied in research for some cancers, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, anxiety and asthma, among other diseases. The jury is still out on these findings, but clearly, the potential that these two ancient remedies may offer relief from some modern day ailments is alive and well and under investigation!
